FBI taking backup DNS offline this coming monday

07.6.2012

Have you heard about the virus that takes over your domain-name services? The FBI caught the miscreants last November but the bureau’s temporary solution to help folks who were infected is set to go offline this coming monday. If you’re still infected you may have trouble getting online this next week.

For info on the virus search for “Rogue DNS” or “DNS Changer” — it works by tricking your computer into using the wrong domain-name servers, so that if you ask for Apple.com, or Google.com, instead of the real site you may be misdirected to a fake site that looks legitimate but will gleefully collect any info you care to let loose of, such as login credentials or payment info.

The FBI implemented a set of temporary DNS servers to help folks who were infected, but those machines are set to go offline this coming monday. If you’re infected you may not be able to get online after they’re switched off.
